Ghost Pressing Bed, Frequent Nightmares! Is It Evil Spirits or Sleep Paralysis? 11 Ways to Wake Up

7/14/2026Newly published

Many people have privately asked us about the experience of “ghost pressing bed” (鬼压床). It is a widely circulated folk term, generally described as follows: During sleep, you are clearly aware that you are dreaming, yet you cannot wake up no matter what. It is a state between sleep and wakefulness. In severe cases, it can cause breathing difficulties (feeling like you can’t breathe, yet unable to wake up).

1. What Is Ghost Pressing Bed?

Over the past hundred years, Western psychology has extensively studied this phenomenon. In sleep neurology, it is classified as a symptom of sleep paralysis. The sleep cycle proceeds sequentially through the stages of light sleep, deep sleep, and finally REM sleep (the dreaming stage). Sleep paralysis occurs during the REM stage, which is the period when we enter deep sleep and begin dreaming.

So how do we determine whether it is sleep paralysis or ghost pressing bed? Generally speaking, ghost pressing bed has the following characteristics: First, you see phantom shadows; second, you smell strange things; third, you soon fall ill; fourth, you must have visited some unclean place. If these four characteristics are absent, please do not consider it ghost pressing bed—it is just a sleep disorder.

Taoist scriptures clearly record that “ghost pressing bed” is not caused by “ghosts” as commonly understood in folk belief, but by an energy called “evil spirits” (妖邪) that harms people.

Ancient Taoism believed that after a person dies, the three souls ascend to heaven, the seven spirits descend into the earth, and only the three corpses (Peng Zhi, Peng Ju, Peng Jiao) that once resided in the living body transform into the image of the deceased, called ghosts. Ghosts harm people in two ways: one is by suddenly attaching to a person’s body, manifesting various words and behaviors of the deceased, unrelated to the host’s thoughts—this is called “collision” (撞客). This usually resolves on its own after the ghost says what it needs to say, and the host returns to normal. The other way is when a person, especially while walking at night, bumps into a ghost, leading to symptoms such as mental confusion, sudden illness, high fever, or flat warts. Many people, especially during Ghost Month, find that they have many more dreams, many of which are nightmares, and ghost pressing bed occurs more frequently.

2. Causes of Ghost Pressing Bed

1. The Five Pervasive Spirits Are Actually Ghost Pressing Bed

The Five Pervasive Spirits (五通神), also called the Five Lang Spirits or Five Rampant Spirits, are a general term for demons and lonely ghosts that roam the countryside and delight in seducing others’ wives and daughters. They are not specific to any one type of ghost or god. Usually, five statues are enshrined and offered blood sacrifices, collectively called the “Five Pervasives.” They are widely worshipped by the people, and some say they have the power to bring wealth. Legend has it that when the Five Pervasive Spirits seduce someone’s wife or daughter, the victim’s body cannot move. This is very similar to the symptoms of ghost pressing bed. The Five Pervasive Spirits were likely妖精 (yaoguai) in the Jiangnan region and have now disappeared. Worshipping the Five Pervasive Spirits is considered excessive worship (淫祀), which brings no blessings but only disasters. Even if wealth comes temporarily, retribution will come a hundredfold later.

2. Metaphysical Analysis

From a metaphysical perspective: First, in Feng Shui, the Five Ghosts position (五鬼位) is where ghosts gather. If you sleep in the Five Ghosts position or place your bed there, ghost pressing bed is very likely. Second, in the Bazi system, the concept of “emptiness” (空亡) reflects a person’s real state. “Emptiness” means nothingness, indicating no connection with the six relatives; “death” refers to the deceased, suggesting a connection with the spirits of deceased relatives. People with strong yang energy generally do not experience ghost pressing bed, while those with weak yin energy or weak Bazi are prone to it.

3. Karmic Debtors

One type of ghost pressing bed is caused by karmic debtors coming to press the bed. In this case, you may have dreamed of something before the episode, and you won’t forget it afterward. It’s best to repay your debts early. The best way to repay is to be a good person and do good deeds, silently dedicating the merit to your debtor. When they are liberated, you also gain merit.

4. Four Feng Shui Taboos for the Head of the Bed

  • The bedroom is a private space with high privacy requirements. If the head of the bed faces the bedroom door, not only is privacy compromised, but it also tempts the residents to indulge in lust and desire.

  • Many people place a mirror at the head of the bed so they can check their appearance as soon as they wake up. However, in Feng Shui, mirrors should not be placed at the head of the bed because they can reflect external evil energy directly onto your head, reducing sleep quality and sometimes causing nightmares.

  • Some people like to collect antiques and even incorporate them into daily life. In Feng Shui, antiques carry very heavy evil and yin energy. Many antiques have been through wars, stained with blood, and many are burial objects, which are inauspicious. If placed at the head of the bed, their yin and evil energy will affect your fortune.

  • The head of the bed sharing a wall with a bathroom is a less common but possible layout. It is especially bad if the head of the bed faces the toilet.

3. Eleven Ways to Wake Yourself Up

If you encounter ghost pressing bed, what can you do to wake up effectively?

1. Chant the Holy Name of Taiyi Salvation Lord

If you encounter ghost pressing bed, silently recite the holy name “Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun” (太乙救苦天尊) in your mind to relieve the nightmare. As the “Salvation Treasure Declaration” says: “Responding to calls, vowing boundless, transforming in ten directions, saving all beings.”

It is said that when people encounter suffering, if they sincerely chant the holy name of Taiyi Salvation Lord, he will respond accordingly, helping them resolve difficulties and turn misfortune into good fortune. As long as sentient beings chant the holy name, they will naturally resonate with the Tao power of Taiyi, receiving immediate response, keeping all evils at bay, and preventing all disasters. Chanting it ten thousand times brings endless blessings, auspiciousness, and longevity.

2. Do Not Resist

When you feel pressed down and unable to move, do not resist, as it may worsen the experience.

3. Wiggle Your Toes

Try to move your limbs, such as fingers and toes. Since most sleep paralysis affects the abdomen, chest, and throat, focusing on your toes and trying to move them may wake you up.

4. Clench Your Fists

This is similar to point 3.

5. Focus on Breathing

Breathing is controlled by internal organs like the heart and is not paralyzed like the arms, chest, or legs. So if you can control your breathing, you can control your fear.

6. Self-Suggestion

When you feel sleep paralysis, first relax and tell yourself, “This is ghost pressing bed; it’s okay.” This may actually help you wake up directly.

7. Seek Help from a Bed Partner

If someone sleeps with you, tell them about your sleep paralysis symptoms. For example, ask your spouse to wake you if they see you breathing heavily and irregularly.

8. Use Coughing

Use vocal changes, such as breathing or coughing, to wake yourself up. These actions are controlled by the autonomic nervous system and can be consciously regulated even during sleep.

9. Rub Your Face

One of the most effective methods is to rub your face once you realize you are in sleep paralysis. Usually, doing it two or three times will wake you up.

10. Make a Plan

The above suggestions have helped many people overcome sleep paralysis, but they may not work for everyone. You need to make a plan, like a fire escape plan, so that “what to do” becomes deeply ingrained in your mind.

Additionally, after waking up, you should immediately get out of bed, turn on the light, and wash your face with cold water. If you go back to sleep, you may fall into sleep paralysis again.

11. Wear a Talisman

Placing a talisman to ward off evil at the head of the bed is very effective.

Conclusion

Regarding ghost pressing bed, there are both metaphysical and Feng Shui explanations as well as scientific sleep explanations. If it happens, don’t panic—chanting holy names or moving your toes can help you save yourself. Usually, doing more good deeds, nurturing your own yang energy, paying attention to bedroom layout, avoiding staying up late and anxiety will ensure peaceful sleep at night, and you will rarely be troubled by nightmares again.
