The Ancestral Lineage of Fire Thunder Hall
Our story begins in the Song Dynasty, amidst the flourishing landscape of Quanzhen Taoism in Jingzhou, particularly around the Honghu and Jianli regions. By the Yuan Dynasty, propelled by the reverence of Genghis Khan for Patriarch Qiu Chuji of the Quanzhen Longmen (Dragon Gate) sect, Taoism experienced a grand revival, permeating villages and towns and deeply embedding itself in local customs.
Among the many practitioners, one figure shone brightest: Daoist Kang (康道人), also known by his Taoist name Jianqing Dao Ren (建清道人). He was a second-generation inheritor of the Quanzhen Longmen sect, who achieved enlightenment through his cultivation on Taihe Mountain (now known as Wudang Mountain). Daoist Kang was renowned for his extraordinary mastery of Taoist arts, developing unique techniques such as the ‘Xiantian Zhijue’ (先天指决 - Primordial Finger Arts), ‘Wushen Zijue’ (五神字决 - Five Spirit Character Arts), and ‘Jiugong Gongfa’ (九宫功法 - Nine Palace Cultivation Methods). Legends of his abilities, like ‘scattering beans to form an army,’ ‘drawing water with a bamboo basket,’ and ‘ghosts pushing a millstone,’ continue to circulate in the local folklore to this day.
It was Daoist Kang who established the ‘Huolei Tangkou’ (火雷堂口 - Fire Thunder Hall Lineage) within the Dongyue Temple in Honghu. This lineage quickly gained significant local influence. The temple, situated by the Honghu Lake, was founded during the Yuan Dynasty and, through centuries of meticulous maintenance, remains remarkably intact today. The Sacred Ground: Honghu Wangye Temple
Guarding the outlet of Honghu Lake stands the revered Wangye Temple (王爷庙). This temple is dedicated to two principal figures: General Ding Feng (丁奉), a distinguished general from the late Eastern Wu period of the Three Kingdoms, and the revered founder of Fire Thunder Hall, Daoist Kang.
General Ding Feng, a mighty general in life, became a protective deity in death, silently blessing all beings. It is said that when boats navigating the Yangtze River encounter storms, calling upon Ding Feng’s name ensures safe passage. He is celebrated as the ‘Lucky Star of Jianghan,’ safeguarding the peace of the Yangtze waterway, and his temple enjoys flourishing worship. Legend has it that Ding Feng was enshrined here, and later generations honored him as the ‘Jingjiang Wangye’ (靖江王爷 - King of Jingjiang), with the local people building this temple in his memory.
A famous tale recounts how Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty, pursued by Jin Wuzhu, attempted to cross the Yangtze to Jiangnan. His boat was capsized by a storm mid-river. As the Emperor sank, a martial general emerged from the waters, lifting him and safely delivering him to the southern bank. Upon describing the general’s appearance and stature, locals informed the Emperor that it was the 19th day of the sixth lunar month, Ding Feng’s birthday, and that his savior was their ancestor, the renowned Three Kingdoms general, Ding Feng. In gratitude for his life being saved, Emperor Gaozong issued an imperial decree to construct a temple, posthumously bestowing upon Ding Feng the title of ‘Jingjiang Shidi’ (靖江世帝 - World Emperor of Jingjiang). The common people referred to him as ‘Jingjiang Wangye’ or ‘Wangye Pusa’ (王爷菩萨 - Bodhisattva King), and the temple’s incense burned exceptionally bright.

This clever wordplay, which can be read in multiple ways, speaks to the enduring reverence for the mountain and the ceaseless flow of the river.
In times past, hundreds of fishing boats from Honghu, transporting fresh fish to Hankou daily, would pause at Wangye Temple to pray to Jingjiang Wangye for safe passage. This devotion ensured the temple’s immense popularity. During the war, the temple played a crucial role, monthly channeling 200,000 silver dollars in taxes to the New Fourth Army’s Fifth Division, making a significant contribution to the liberation of New China.
Standing proudly at the temple entrance is a 400-year-old Chongyang tree (重阳树). This venerable tree witnessed General He Long drilling and reorganizing troops beneath its branches, where they lined up and took oaths. It also served as a vital signal post for revolutionaries (who used a system of red and green seven-star lights on the tree to signal enemy presence or absence, ensuring accurate and timely information). Affectionately known as the ‘Red Army Tree,’ it remains verdant and robust, its branches lush, a testament to its powerful vitality.
